The 7 mile walk from Beadnell to Bamburgh covers the best of the Northumberland Coast. Beadnell Bay and the beach approaching Bamburgh from Islestone rocks are beautiful stretches of golden sands backed by grassy dunes. The contrasting villages of Beadnell, Seahouses and Bamburgh add much to the walk.
Start the walk by driving to Bamburgh and getting the X18 bus to Beadnell. It takes 15 minutes and at present (2024) there is a bus at 10.52. Ideal! It is definitely a much better one way walk than attempting to construct a circular. Beadnell is one of my favourite villages on the Northumbrian Coast. Do not head straight off on the walk to BBamburgh but head south, past the old harbour and on to the wide sweep of Beadnell Bay. It is spectacular. In addition take the time to explore the village itself, it is one of my favourites.
The bay from Beadnell to Seahouses is initially rocky but soon becomes sandy and typically Northumbrian. The approach to Seahouses is a delight. Head for the headland and climb on to the golf course before heading along the shore line to the working harbour of Seahouses. Amongst the fishing boats are the ferries heading out to the Farne Isles. Seahouses is a busier village/town and to be honest not worth exploring, at least on this walk.
The best part of the walk heads from Seahouses on a sandy beach heading for the point of Islestone. Islestone is a fine place, particularly when the rocks are exposed and you can wander on to the far point. The Farne Islands are best seen from here. Turning towards Bamburgh is special. The castle dominates of course but the perfect sands stretch on forever and make for a wonderful foreground. It is one of my favourite 1 1/2 miles of walking anywhere. Finishing any walk in the world famous village of Bamburgh is good.
If you have time continue north past Bamburgh to Budle Point and the lovely views over Budle Bay. Return via the golf course to complete the 3 mile addition.
I always try and walk as much as possible South to North. This means you walk with the sun to your back most of the time and ensures the sharpest and best views are in front of you. It makes a significant difference on a walk like this.
