Pendle Hill from Downham The climb up Pendle Hill from Downham commences through farmland. On the open hillside the path leads directly to the summit but on the return it is worth exploring the vast plateau before returning to Downham. The Walk It was a mid winter day, cold but clear, when I headed off from Downham to climb 3 Rating: Moderate walk 6.5mi Distance: 6.5 miles / 10.4 km 430m Elevation: 430m / 1410ft
The Moors North of Slaidburn The moors north of Slaidburn offer a wild and lonely walk through grouse moors. Walkers are a rare sight, wildlife more plentiful and it is place to immerse yourself in its bleakness. The Walk There is a large expanse of rarely visited moorland to the north of Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge. It typifies the emptiness 3 Rating: Moderate walk 7.5mi Distance: 7.5 miles / 12 km 435m Elevation: 435m / 1427ft
Weets Hill and ‘Barlick’ Weets Hill is surprisingly impressive. Topped by a cairn, trig point and a well positioned bench the views across Barnoldswick (‘Barlick’ to its friends) are excellent. It is more of a local’s walk however and therefore quiet and those you meet knowledgeable. The Walk On arrival at the summit of Weets Hill enjoy the views. 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4.5mi Distance: 4.5 miles / 7.2 km 250m Elevation: 250m / 820ft
Croasdale Brook from Slaidburn Woodland, farmland, some isolated farms and views to the moors beyond characterise this walk along Croasdale Brook from Slaidburn. The large village of Slaidburn has a pretty river front green. The Walk Slaidburn is the centre of tourism in the Forest of Bowland. However this means very little as this is a quiet area unspoilt 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 3mi Distance: 3 miles / 4.8 km 89m Elevation: 89m / 292ft
Trough of Bowland There is some wonderful, unspoilt countryside lying to the north of Dunsop Bridge. Having enjoyed the solitude, the tracks emerge at the Trough Of Bowland before returning via Langden Brook. The Walk Heading north from Dunsop Bridge brought me in to the heart of the Forest of Bowland. I was inspired to investigate the remote 3 Rating: Moderate walk 8.5mi Distance: 8.5 miles / 13.6 km 344m Elevation: 344m / 1128ft
A walk in Gisburn Forest On a wet or windy day, a walk in Gisburn Forest makes a good choice. There are marked trails and less well marked paths! Choose your own and enjoy the solitude and quiet only a forest can bring. The Walk I have never been particularly attracted by forestry walking. The open spaces, long distance views 1 Rating: Easier walk 2mi Distance: 2 miles / 3.2 km 64m Elevation: 64m / 209ft
Bentham Heritage Walk High Bentham has some very good views over Ingleborough. The Bentham Heritage Walk starts by crossing the eastern fields and returns alongside the River Wenning. The Walk On arrival at Bentham I was struck by the sign that pointed me in the direction of the Bentham Heritage Walk. In fact there is a colour coded 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 5mi Distance: 5 miles / 8 km 106m Elevation: 106m / 347ft
Winter Hill Winter Hill is a large area of high moorland lying to the north of Bolton. It is distinguished by its 300m TV aerial serving much of Lancashire but it is so much more than that. This walk offers the very best of Winter Hill. The Walk My first visit to the summit of Winer Hill 3 Rating: Moderate walk 7mi Distance: 7 miles / 11.2 km 395m Elevation: 395m / 1295ft
