Goathland and Grosmont The walk between Goathland and Grosmont climbs initially on to the moors. Here the views open out spectacularly. After dropping in to Grosmont (best place to see the steam trains) return via the old Rail Trail. The Walk This is one of my favourite walks in the North York Moors. Rosedale Explorer walk The Rosedale Explorer walk passes through North Dale and returns via Rosedale. En route are some interesting industrial remains (and railway) and plenty of pretty countryside. It feels quintessentially English. The Walk Apparently Rosedale has more holiday cottages than farmers these days. Farndale and High Blakey Moor There are some fine walks in the North York Moors and the circuit of Farndale and High Blakey Moor is one of the best. This long walk circles the head of the valley along excellent paths and tracks. The Fryup Dales The Fryup Dales lie in the heart of the North York Moors. This is farming lands overlapped by some low grassy, bracken strewn ridges offering pleasant and interesting walking. Danby is a lovely village. The Walk I first discovered the Fry Up Dales on my Coast to Coast walk. Sutton Bank and the White Horse The area around Sutton Bank and the White Horse makes for a very enjoyable circular walk. However it takes a bit of planning. This walk includes a visit to the White Horse, Gormire Lake and superb views across the Vale Of York. Round Hill on Urra Moor Chop Gate in Bilsdale is the start of this walk to Round Hill on Urra Moor, the highest point in the North York Moors. The moorland walking on Urra Moor is on very good paths with excellent views. High Sneaton Moor Goathland is the base for a fine walk up High Sneaton Moor. Lilla Cross, Fylingdales and the excellent Eller Beck add to the enjoyment of this interesting walk. In addition visit the ‘film star’ station at Goathland. The Walk This is a wonderfully airy walk. Hole of Horcum walk The Hole of Horcum walk takes you to a tourist hot spot near Whitby. Rather than just a visit to the ‘Hole’ the day is much enhanced by a longer walk at Levisham, approaching via the high moors and returning along the floor of the valley. Head of Farndale walk This is a short walk at the head of Farndale. The walk rises quickly to the ridge where you follow the old railway track around to Bloworth Crossing. It offers a good taster of the scenery in this lovely area. Hills over Hawnby Hawnby Hill and Easterside Hill are two prominent humps best climbed from the village of Hawnby. The terrain on the hills of Hawnby themselves makes for some enjoyable walking, as does the crossing which links them. Moors above Osmotherley The Moors above Osmotherley stretch deep in to the North York Moors. However the walking (as long as you stick to paths) is quick and easy. On this walk there is the bonus of passing the lovely Jenny Brewster reservoirs on the approach. Scaling Reservoir and Beacon Hill Lealholm in the Esk Valley is the start for the walk over the moors to Scaling Reservoir and Beacon Hill. To the north are views over the sea, to the south the North York Moors. It can be a little off piste but more enjoyable for it.
