Goathland and Grosmont The walk between Goathland and Grosmont climbs initially on to the moors. Here the views open out spectacularly. After dropping in to Grosmont (best place to see the steam trains) return via the old Rail Trail. The Walk This is one of my favourite walks in the North York Moors. Rosedale Explorer walk The Rosedale Explorer walk passes through North Dale and returns via Rosedale. En route are some interesting industrial remains (and railway) and plenty of pretty countryside. It feels quintessentially English. The Walk Apparently Rosedale has more holiday cottages than farmers these days. Steam train from Pickering This is a one way walk that starts by taking the steam train from Pickering and walking back from Levisham. The walk starts in the moors and returns via the woods and farmland of this attractive area. The Walk Any walk that starts with a ride on a steam train has to be recommended. Levisham and Lockton walk Levisham and Lockton are two attractive villages north of Pickering which makes for a pleasant short walk. The walk links the villages and continues through some pretty woodland and open countryside. Cod Beck Reservoir from Osmotherley Cod Beck Reservoir from Osmotherley is a fine short walk. The reservoir is beautifully set in woodland and the return through the trees opens out to give enticing views across the Vale of York. The Walk Barely a mile north of Osmotherley lies Cod Beck Reservoir. Ash Dale at Helmsley walk Beautiful Ash Dale at Helmsley is a lovely place to walk. The woods in spring and early summer are full of life. Start by walking up the river (stream really) and returning via the higher land. The Walk Looking at the map of Helmsley there are two obvious walks. Dales of Kirkbymoorside Gillamoor and Fadmore are two of the dales of Kirkbymoorside which compose an excellent walk through attractive, rolling countryside. Idyllic Kirkdale Church, hidden in the woods makes for a fine finale. The Walk I was pleasantly surprised to find some excellent walking country north of Kirkbymoorside. Hole of Horcum walk The Hole of Horcum walk takes you to a tourist hot spot near Whitby. Rather than just a visit to the ‘Hole’ the day is much enhanced by a longer walk at Levisham, approaching via the high moors and returning along the floor of the valley. Villages of the Esk Valley Take the train from Grosmont to Lealholm and return via the attractive villages of the Esk Valley. The walking is easy and because it stays close to the river it is full of variety and interest (both natural and historical). An Ingleby Greenhow walk This is a most enjoyable walk at Ingleby Greenhow, taking you through a quiet area of forestry and farmland. Ingleby Greenhow is one of a number of small villages that lie under the great northern scar of the North York Moors. Fortunately it is one of the quietest. Scarborough Sea Cut Starting from near Scalby follow the canal of the Scarborough Sea Cut as it heads inland. On reaching the River Derwent return via Raincliffe Woods to Scalby. The Walk The Scarborough Sea Cut is fed by small streams and becks draining water away from the moors on the western side of Scalby and Newby. Walk through Dalby Forest Enjoy a lovely walk through Dalby Forest near Scarborough, best when the wind is blowing elsewhere. The forest tracks are well set up and there is a pleasant riverside section on the approach to Thornton-le-Dale.
