A walk in Grizedale Forest Taking a walk in Grizedale Forest is best left for a wet or windy day as it is sheltered. The routes are well marked and the cafe is good. The walking itself though does suffer from the constant presence of the gloomy trees. Great for bikers. Little Langdale Little Langdale is the quieter of the two Langdale valleys. Because the mountains are less well known, publicised less it is tends to be less busy. There are a number of low level walks along the valley, this one includes the old slate mine in Tilberthwaite. Whinlatter Whinlatter fell (a Wainwright) lies above Whinlatter forest. The simplest and best way of attaining the summit is to walk through the forest from the main car park. Then enjoy the views when breaking out on to the open fell. The Walk 1,696 ft. St John’s in the Vale Tewet Tarn is a lovely, rarely visited tarn and the object of this short walk in St John’s in the Vale. Enjoy the church during the walk as well as the excellent views across to Blencathra (the best views of my favourite mountain). Tarn Hows Tarn Hows is a picturesque tarn set amongst an area of attractive woodland situated between Coniston and Ambleside. It is an easy walk to complete and offers a good taste of Lakeland. Gummer’s How Gummer’s How is a short climb to a wonderful view point on the south east shores of Windermere. The rocky summit is a taste of Lakeland in miniature. Barrow from Braithwaite This short, but rewarding, walk up Barrow from Braithwaite has excellent views. It offers a great vantage point for understanding the layout of Coledale Round as well as good views north towards Blencathra and Skiddaw. The Walk 1,494 ft. A Walk round Rydal Water Any walk round Rydal Water is following in the footsteps of greatness, in this case William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. Their regular walk took them round Rydal Water taking in the shores of this pretty lake and onto the path over the Coffin Route. Hampsfell from Grange-over-Sands A number low lying hills lie to the south of the Lake District. The exposed limestone on them makes them a real pleasure to walk on. Derwentwater walk Use the excellent ferry service to enjoy this Derwentwater walk without having to walk the 4 miles return from Keswick. The paths pick their way amongst the trees on the shoreline and the views over the lake are always interesting. It is the best part of Derwentwater and very straightforward.
