Pike o’ Blisco Pike o’ Blisco is a rugged Lake District mountain that overlooks the Langdale Pikes from the south. It is often added to a Crinkle Crags walk but also makes for an excellent, if steep, climb on its own. The Walk 2304′. An irresistible name combined with a true mountain profile makes Pike o’ Blisco one of my 3 Rating: Moderate walk 6mi Distance: 6 miles / 9.6 km 583m Elevation: 583m / 1912ft
Bassenthwaite to Threlkeld The area to the north of Skiddaw is a wonderful place to walk. A good path follows the route from Bassenthwaite to Threlkeld and passes Dash Falls and Skiddaw House before finishing with fine views down Borrowdale. The Walk The lonely walk past Skiddaw House is superb. The practicalities are though the walk is best 4 Rating: Moderate and over 10 miles 10.5mi Distance: 10.5 miles / 16.8 km 387m Elevation: 387m / 1269ft
A walk round Haweswater A few years ago I did a walk round Haweswater in drought conditions. The western shores are lovely on a path which keeps close to the water but much of the eastern return are on the side of the road. The views compensate and more recently (2025) there is more walking off the road. The 4 Rating: Moderate and over 10 miles 10.5mi Distance: 10.5 miles / 16.8 km 319m Elevation: 319m / 1046ft
Twin Peaks of Longsleddale Tarn Crag and Grey Crag are the twin peaks of Longsleddale. They are rounded hills of rough grass which are easily linked. It is a long drive up the Longsleddale valley but if you are Wainwright bagging you will have to do it. The Walk 2176′. I have now been up Tarn Crag four times 3 Rating: Moderate walk 5.5mi Distance: 5.5 miles / 8.8 km 479m Elevation: 479m / 1571ft
Wainwrights of Ennerdale To the south of Ennerdale Water lie 4 Wainwright fells which are probably the least visited in the Lake District. Grike, Crag Fell and Lank Rigg make a natural circuit but Caw Fell to the east is a bit of an outlier. The main attraction of this walk are the views over Ennerdale which are 4 Rating: Moderate and over 10 miles 9mi Distance: 9 miles / 14.4 km 800m Elevation: 800m / 2624ft
Smardale Gill walk The walk at Smardale Gill will take you up on to the moors before returning via the old railway line, alongside Scandal Beck. The walk is very pleasant but becomes better as the track passes under the viaduct. The Walk Only a few miles from Kirkby Stephen lies Scandal Beck and the magnificent Smardale Viaduct 3 Rating: Moderate walk 7mi Distance: 7 miles / 11.2 km 223m Elevation: 223m / 731ft
A walk to Brough Castle Brough Castle is perched upon a small hill just to the south of Brough. The walk near Brough Castle passes through some rolling countryside and farmland all under the shadow of Mickle Fell. The Walk Brough Castle forms the centre piece of a walk to the south of Brough and an area I knew very 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 5.5mi Distance: 5.5 miles / 8.8 km 76m Elevation: 76m / 249ft
West of Thirlmere Harrop Tarn is the focus for this quiet walk to the west of Thirlmere. The walk includes a climb through woods to a rarely visited tarn. There is also some walking along the quiet shores of the lake itself. The Walk I had never been tempted to walk on the quiet west of Thirlmere. This 3 Rating: Moderate walk 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 193m Elevation: 193m / 633ft
Silver How and Easedale Tarn Silver How lies to the west of Grasmere and is full of rocky knolls, lumps and hollows. Hidden tarns pepper the area and there is always a surprise around the corner (look for the tarn in Megs Gill). Descend via Easedale Tarn for a ‘proper’ Lake District walk with outstanding views. The Walk Most people 3 Rating: Moderate walk 8mi Distance: 8 miles / 12.8 km 540m Elevation: 540m / 1771ft
Upper Borrowdale From Seatoller the walk through Upper Borrowdale follows the lower slopes of High Spy before dropping down to Castle Crag. The short but steep climb to the classic views from Castle Crag is followed by a stroll up river to Seatoller. The Walk The walk round Castle Crag and along the riverside of the upper 3 Rating: Moderate walk 5.5mi Distance: 5.5 miles / 8.8 km 267m Elevation: 267m / 876ft
Kirk Fell and Great Gable Kirk Fell and Great Gable are two of the giants that dominate the head of Wasdale. The climb from Wasdale head is steep, in places including some mild scrambling, but rewarded by some stunning views and a real sense of achievement. The Walk Great Gable is a popular mountain and can be climbed from a 5 Rating: Difficult walk 6.5mi Distance: 6.5 miles / 10.4 km 1050m Elevation: 1050m / 3445ft
A walk in Grizedale Forest Taking a walk in Grizedale Forest is best left for a wet or windy day as it is sheltered. The routes are well marked and the cafe is good. The walking itself though does suffer from the constant presence of the gloomy trees. Great for bikers. The Walk Taking a walk through a forest is 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 151m Elevation: 151m / 495ft
