The lead mines on Grassington Moor High above the village of Grassington lies Grassington Moor, a vast plateau of moorland which was the location for a large and well preserved lead mining industry in days past. Farleton Fell and Hutton Roof This was a surprise, at least in how good they were even if I knew they existed. The two fells of Farleton Fell and Hutton Roof lie just off the M6 and offer some fine walking through the limestone. It is an area of Special Scientific Significance. Druid’s Temple at Masham The Druid’s Temple at Masham was a folly built by the local landowner 200 years ago. It is an impressive stone circle. The walk is across pleasant countryside with good views across the area. The Walk There are a number of fine walks near Masham. Leyburn & the Ladies Shawl Leyburn is an attractive Yorkshire Dales market town and a good base to explore Wensleydale. The best of Leyburn is shown though by a walk from the town along ‘The Shawl’ and returning alongside the River Ure. Its tame countryside but full of history, country houses and tranquil scenery. Ingleborough from Clapham The climb of Ingleborough from Clapham is one of the finest walks in the Yorkshire Dales. The ascent is full of interest and the descent takes you through, in my opinion, the finest limestone pavements in England. Ancient Castles of Mallerstang The two ancient castles of Mallerstang (Lammerside and Pendragon) offer a focus for an excellent walk along this rarely visited dale. The backdrop of Wild Boar Fell and the embryonic River Eden adds to one of my favourite walks. The Walk Mallerstang is an unspoilt dale to the south of Kirkby Stephen. The Lands of Bolton Castle Mary Queen of Scots used to ride through the lands of Bolton Castle when she was being held captive in the 16th century. This short walk offers a flavour of what she must have observed, a truly beautiful place may have helped take her mind off her travails. The Limestone above Conistone Walking through the limestone above Conistone is exceptionally enjoyable. The limestone creates a unique (in this country) backdrop to the walk. As a result take your time and explore the areas off path. The Walk Much of the pleasure of walking in the southern Dales is due to the excellence of the paths. History in Gunnerside Gill The history of the Yorkshire Dales and Swaledale in particular can be best seen in Gunnerside Gill. The old workings are prominent on the walk and characterise each step. It is a walk with a difference. Fountains Abbey Fountains Abbey is the best preserved abbey in the Yorkshire. This walk goes through the abbey ruins and in to the grounds, exploring them in some detail. The walk passes an excellent cafe before heading in to Studley Park. The Walk There is nothing rugged about Fountains Abbey or Studley Park. Skipton Castle and Woods The walk through Skipton Castle and Woods is a pleasant way to get a feel for the medieval origins of the town without walking to far. The walk starts in the woods and returns over the fields with good views over Skipton. The Walk I always like castles to have a proper history. Settle and the River Ribble There are a number of lovely villages near Settle and the River Ribble. There are also two excellent waterfalls, dramatic limestone scenery and isolated farms on the higher sections of the walk.
