Bentham Riverside Walk The Bentham riverside walk is a pleasant stroll linking High and Lo Bentham. There are some glimpses of Ingleborough and the countryside is excellent. The Walk High and Low Bentham are neighbouring villages separated by an attractive section of the River Wenning. Limestone Pavements over Orton The limestone pavements over Orton offer a lovely half day walk with good views. Orton itself is an attractive village however it is the beautiful pavements above that are the key to the walk. Fountains Abbey Fountains Abbey is the best preserved abbey in the Yorkshire. This walk goes through the abbey ruins and in to the grounds, exploring them in some detail. The walk passes an excellent cafe before heading in to Studley Park. The Walk There is nothing rugged about Fountains Abbey or Studley Park. Alwinton & Upper Coquetdale Alwinton provides the base for an exploration of the moors, hills and valleys of Upper Coquetdale. The views are far reaching but I most enjoyed the walk alongside Usway Burn, hemmed in by the steep slopes on either side. Dales of Kirkbymoorside Gillamoor and Fadmore are two of the dales of Kirkbymoorside which compose an excellent walk through attractive, rolling countryside. Idyllic Kirkdale Church, hidden in the woods makes for a fine finale. The Walk I was pleasantly surprised to find some excellent walking country north of Kirkbymoorside. Hole of Horcum walk The Hole of Horcum walk takes you to a tourist hot spot near Whitby. Rather than just a visit to the ‘Hole’ the day is much enhanced by a longer walk at Levisham, approaching via the high moors and returning along the floor of the valley. Skipton Castle and Woods The walk through Skipton Castle and Woods is a pleasant way to get a feel for the medieval origins of the town without walking to far. The walk starts in the woods and returns over the fields with good views over Skipton. The Walk I always like castles to have a proper history. Head of Farndale walk This is a short walk at the head of Farndale. The walk rises quickly to the ridge where you follow the old railway track around to Bloworth Crossing. It offers a good taster of the scenery in this lovely area. Rievaulx Abbey walk Rievaulx Abbey is one of best preserved of the abbeys in the country. It sits on a hillside, near a river and surrounded by woods. This short Rievaulx Abbey walk takes in all of these. Eel Tarn in Eskdale For a short walk in to some rugged, quiet, typical Lakeland scenery look no further than Eel Tarn in Eskdale. Start from Boot and climb steadily through the bracken to Eel Tarn, continuing to Stony Tarn if you wish. Dove Crag and Red Screes Follow two long and interesting ridges in a climb over Dove Crag and Red Screes from Ambleside. It provides a good alternative to the more popular Fairfield Round. The crossing at Scandale Hause is full of interest. Beatrix Potter Country Between Windermere and Coniston is an area of lowland tarns and woodland known as Beatrix Potter Country. It is where she lived and was spent the happiest days of her life. Claiffe Heights is the high point and a challenge to find, I assume she did!.
