Walking near Feizor There is some lovely limestone walking near Feizor. Scars and pavements abound. In addition the views across to Pen-y-Ghent are good and the cafe in Feizor is the best around. The Walk There is something immensely satisfying about walking through the limestone of the southern Dales. Gilsland and Birdoswald Fort on Hadrian’s Wall Birdoswald is one of the best preserved forts on Hadrian’s Wall. It lies on the western edge of the most interesting section of the wall and is best approached from the village of Gilsland. From Gilsland to Birdoswald is only 2 miles so I have extended the walk along the wall with a return via 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 7.5mi Distance: 7.5 miles / 12 km 180m Elevation: 180m / 590ft
Latterbarrow from Hawkshead The summit of Latterbarrow is an excellent place to view the Coniston fells and much of the south western Lakes. Climbing Latterbarrow from Hawkshead is, in itself, very straightforward on a very good path. The Walk 803′. For many years I never realised that there was an excellent short walk near Hawkshead. Terrington walk and the Wolds The Terrington walk through the Hambleton Hills is a pleasant way of discovering the area. The walk is a mix of woodland and farmland, dotted with isolated farms and villages. Spend some time enjoying Terrington when you have completed the walk. Aber Falls walk Sandwiched between the northern fringes of the large upland plateau of the Carneddau lies Aber Falls. There is, strictly, two very impressive waterfalls that can be easily visited on an excellent circular walk. Grassington to Skipton walk Take the bus from Skipton and then return over the moors on a one way walk from Grassington to Skipton. On either side of the bleak moors are the villages of Linton, Thorpe and Embsay. The Walk Embsay Moor can be particularly bleak in bad weather. Crosby Ravensworth and Maulds Meaburn The walk combines the two attractive villages of Crosby Ravensworth and Maulds Meaburn before heading on to the moors. It is a quiet and unspoilt shortish walk in this rarely visited part of the country. The Walk The River Lyvennet villages of Crosby Ravensworth and Maulds Meaburn are a couple of hidden gems. Grasmere to Ambleside via Loughrigg Fell Take the one way walk from Grasmere to Ambleside via one of two routes. The high level route over Loughrigg Fell is my favourite but walking the shores of Rydal Water is still very pleasant. The Walk It is very straightforward to take the bus to Grasmere. Rogan’s Seat from Keld Rogan’s Seat lies within a large stretch of moorland in Upper Swaledale. The views are interesting rather than spectacular and the summit cairn a bit of a damp squib! The climb from Keld is the most enjoyable approach. The Walk I first came across Rogan’s Seat whilst Marilyn bagging. Pennine Way Reservoirs There is a large bleak area of high moorland that marks the Pennine Way between Hebden Bridge and Haworth. On this particular walk there are four reservoirs all with straight forward walking along the banks. The Walk Hebden Water drains towards Hebden Bridge via a number of reservoirs. This area of moorland, with its steep 3 Rating: Moderate walk 9mi Distance: 9 miles / 14.4 km 400m Elevation: 400m / 1312ft
Holy Island & the Pilgrim’s Way Any visit to Holy Island (or Lindisfarne) makes for a fantastic day out. However the day is greatly enhanced by completing a circuit of the island and taking to the memorable 3 mile sands of the Pilgrim’s Way. Pilgrim’s Way is memorable. Ravenscar to Hayburn Wyke The circular walk from Ravenscar to Hayburn Wyke starts by following the coastal path past the look out stations. Return from Hayburn Wyke is via the route of the Old Railway. The Walk I have always found Ravenscar a bit of a strange place.
