Walk along the Langdale Valley

August 27, 2024

The Langdale Valley is ringed by spectacular hikes up to the mountains. The best are listed below. However this walk takes you along the beautiful valley floor between Elterwater and the New Dubngeon Ghyll Hotel. Good walking along Great Langdale Beck with views to the fells around.

The Walk

I prefer starting the walk at Elterwater and heading towards the highest mountains. It is perfectly possible to start the walk by heading the ‘wrong way’ and completing a 1 1/2 hour circuit of Elterwater but the walk is often very busy and should be treated as a separate outing. Start at the river alongside the Eltermere Inn and head upstream. The first half of the walk winds its way through woodland and a fine campsite. In addition it passes close to the disused slate quarry which looks to be altered/adapted in to an outdoor play area including a zip wire reminiscent of that presently existing in North Wales.

At a packhorse bridge stick to the southern path which now skirts Lingmoor Fell and winds its way through the bracken. It is a beautiful path with outstanding views up the Langdale Valley. The ‘view’ is described below but the walking as you approach the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel a delight. The area at the New Dungeon Ghyll is alive with those setting off or completing outdoor activities with the terrace at Stickle Barn a must for a mid walk break. Camping, rock climbing, gorge walking, parapending and of course climbing the nearby fells are all popular.

From here head back on the northern pathways towards Chapel Stile alongside Greater Langdale Beck. Chapel Stile is worth exploring, a very pretty village with an interesting church. If the weather is hot you may be tempted in to the waters of the river as you approach Elterwater.

Recommend

If you wish to shorten this walk walk from Elterwater to the New Dungeon Ghyll and take the bus back making for a 1 way walk. The 516 runs every hour and takes little more than 10 minutes.

Navigation Tips in the Langdale Valley

One of the best features of paper maps is the size. Therefore as the views open out ‘orientate’ the map (Compass pointing north up the map and then turning map and compass together ensure the magnetic and map arrows are aligned). With an orientated map it is easy to match the mountain names of the map with the view up the Langdale Valley. However for those who simply want to be told what they are looking at here they are from left (south) sweeping round to right (north).
