Twenty four and a half miles and over 5,000 feet of climbing across the highest land in Yorkshire are the raw details of an exceptional day. 5 Rating: Difficult walk 24mi Distance: 24 miles / 38.4 km 1585m Elevation: 1585m / 5200ft
Climb Cross Fell The most popular way to climb Cross Fell is from the small village of Garrigill near Alston. Even then it is a long climb across the moors. On a fine day the views across the north eastern lakes are good. 5 Rating: Difficult walk 15mi Distance: 15 miles / 24 km 573m Elevation: 573m / 1880ft
A walk near Appletreewick This walk near Appletreewick is full of variety. It takes in riverside walking along the Wharfe, the valley of Trollers Gill and some great views down Wharfedale and over Simon’s Seat. 3 Rating: Moderate walk 6mi Distance: 6 miles / 9.6 km 254m Elevation: 254m / 833ft
Semer Water walk The Semer Water walk is unusual. Not only are lakes very rare in the Dales but this one is both a nature reserve and an outdoor centre. The return is much improved by climbing to the ridge above the west banks. 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 90m Elevation: 90m / 295ft
Fair Snape Fell Fair Snape Fell is the highest point in the Forest of Bowland. The walk up is straightforward, if at times wet. The final section to Parlick is a delight, the walking often accompanied by gliders. 3 Rating: Moderate walk 6mi Distance: 6 miles / 9.6 km 323m Elevation: 323m / 1059ft
Ilkley Moor walk The Ilkley Moor walk is very popular. Myths and folklore tend to bring people here, as do the famous rocks of the Cow and Calf. This walk covers the Cow and Calf, Twelve Apostles, summit area and of course the best views. 3 Rating: Moderate walk 5.5mi Distance: 5.5 miles / 8.8 km 191m Elevation: 191m / 626ft
Penistone Hill walk Penistone Hill, just outside Haworth, is mentioned in Wuthering Heights as somewhere that Heathcliffe worked. The remnants of the mines are still there but its the views that make the walk appealing. 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 5mi Distance: 5 miles / 8 km 150m Elevation: 150m / 492ft
Brimham Rocks It is great fun on Brimham Rocks. Rather than just visit though it is more enjoyable to make the visit in to a short but ‘proper’ walk. The rocks themselves are a series of sandstone boulders which you can scramble on. 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 142m Elevation: 142m / 465ft
A Wensleydale Highway The Wensleydale Highway is a short walk from Hawes to the pretty village of Burtersett. The walk is through farm lanes and fields with great views down Wensleydale. It returns via a quiet road. 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 3mi Distance: 3 miles / 4.8 km 65 msm Elevation: 65 msm / 213ft

A walk through Littondale There is no more pleasant way to spend the afternoon than a walk through Littondale. Ancient Castles of Mallerstang The two ancient castles of Mallerstang (Lammerside and Pendragon) offer a focus for an excellent walk along this rarely visited dale. The backdrop of Wild Boar Fell and the embryonic River Eden adds to one of my favourite walks. The Walk Mallerstang is an unspoilt dale to the south of Kirkby Stephen. The dale is 4 Rating: Moderate and over 10 miles 10mi Distance: 10 miles / 16 km 141m Elevation: 141m / 462ft
