Settle and the River Ribble There are a number of lovely villages near Settle and the River Ribble. There are also two excellent waterfalls, dramatic limestone scenery and isolated farms on the higher sections of the walk. A walk up Penistone Hill Penistone Hill, just outside Haworth, is mentioned in Wuthering Heights as somewhere that Heathcliffe worked. The remnants of the mines are still there but its the views that make the walk appealing. The Walk The Penistone Hill walk involves a short sharp climb from the village of Haworth. Aye Gill Pike To the north of Dent lies the long whale back hill of Aye Gill Pike. It is not high enough to be one of the Dales 30 but still has outstanding views across the Dales and on a clear day to the southern lakes. A Wensleydale Highway The Wensleydale Highway is a short walk from Hawes to the pretty village of Burtersett. The walk is through farm lanes and fields with great views down Wensleydale. Darley and Dacre Banks Darley and Dacre Banks occupy a pretty section of the Lower Nidd south of Pateley Bridge. The walk starts alongside the river on a well walked track before returning inland with great views across the valley. Walk at Ripley Castle A walk at Ripley Castle offers an alternative to the official visit . It takes you round the rolling estate countryside to the west with some views of the castle from unusual angles. The Walk It took me a long time to visit Ripley Castle and it’s grounds. Longridge Fell Longridge Fell is a Marilyn mountain with the summit accessed through forestry from the village of Hurst Green. The views are extensive due to the fell’s isolation from other areas of high land. The Walk Similar to Pendle Hill, Longridge Fell dominates its local area. Unlike Pendle though its flanks are covered in forestry and, 3 Rating: Moderate walk 5mi Distance: 5 miles / 8 km 144m Elevation: 144m / 472ft
Climb Pen-y-Ghent Pen-y-Ghent from Horton is the classic climb on this iconic Dales mountain. The walk is much improved by continuing on the mile long ridge to Plover Hill. The Walk Pen-y-Ghent (probable meaning hill on the border) is the most famous and popular of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. A walk at Nenthead Near Alston is an area of remote moorland interspersed with the remains of a lead mining industry. When doing this straightforward walk at Nenthead via Nent Hall it is difficult to believe that this place used to team with life. Nenthead to Garrigill walk The Nenthead to Garrigill walk is highly enjoyable. The fascinating villages at both ends bookmark an area of remote and rarely walked moorland. Ashgill Falls is good as well. The Walk Nenthead has an impressive history. The Beautiful River Nidd The River Nidd south of Pateley Bridge winds its way slowly through some attractive countryside. Some of the villages still show reminders of the areas industrial heritage. The Walk Downriver from Pateley Bridge walking along the River Nidd is a real pleasure. The paths are good and stick unusually close to the water. Penhill Beacon in Wensleydale The prominent cairn of Penhill Beacon is easily visible on the southern slopes of Wensleydale. This walk takes you up on to the moors direct to the beacon before dropping in to the remains of the lead mining industry. The Walk On my first visit I approached Penhill Beacon from the wrong side.
