A Quiet Windermere walk Yes they do exist! Head inland from the lake and discover some rarely visited country offering a quiet Windermere walk. There is a short climb up School Knotts followed by a visit to two peaceful tarns. The return is via the Dales Way. Scafell from the South The most unusual approach is to tackle Scafell from the south. It is also the best. The walk through and climb out of Eskdale is lovely, the wide ridge direct and the return via the lonely waters of Burnmoor Tarn nice and relaxing. . Scafell Pike and Scafell Classic The climb of Scafell Pike and Scafell from Wasdale involves a steep and relentless climb from the valley and a tricky crossing between the two (very separate) mountains. It is rightly a classic. The descent from Scafell is lovely. A Short Walk near Askrigg Bainbridge is the base for this short walk near Askrigg. As well as visiting the old Wensleydale railway there is a short climb to the impressive scar above Bainbridge. However it is a straightforward stroll in the heart of Wensleydale. Short Walk from Osmotherley This short walk from Osmotherley has excellent views over the village. It climbs a little to the edge of the moors before returning via some attractive woodland. An extension to Cod Beck Reservoir is easy to do. Beamsley Moor from Ilkley The walk to Beamsley Moor from Ilkley passes through some rich moorland and tarns before arriving on the fine grassy ridge with excellent views across the south eastern Dales. The Walk I had never thought to explore Beamsley Moor from Ilkley until recently. Previously I preferred the popular walks over Ilkley Moor. Windy Gyle Windy Gyle straddles the English/Scottish border. It is part of a long undulating ridge which culminates at Cheviot. However it is a fine mountain in its own right, approached on this occasion from the Upper Coquet valley to the south. Hackfall Woods near Masham The walk to Hackfall Woods near Masham takes you initially alongside the River Ure. Hackfall Woods (or simply Hackfall) is a beautifully managed woodland peppered with paths, follies and a vast array of fauna and flora. Melmerby Fell To the north of Cross Fell there is a fine Pennine walk up Melmerby Fell. The walk is similar in character to Cross Fell but shorter. It is quiet place and an excellent option to achieve a less frequented visited peak. The Walk Apparently fell runners regularly take to the slopes of Melmerby Fell. Walk around Kirkby Malzeard The village and land around Kirkby Malzeard is hidden in an area between Masham, Ripon and the Eastern Dales . The village and buildings of the village are lovely and the walk starts with an interesting section of woodland. Devoke Water Situated between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley is a delectable area of water, Devoke Water. It is a fisherman’s paradise, very quiet and surrounded by low lying hills. Ford & Etal Historical Walk Sandwiched between Wooler and the Scottish border is the Ford and Etail estate. Linking them makes for a pleasant, mixed terrain walk full of historical interest. Any walk bookended by two castles has to be interesting! The Walk I prefer to start the Ford & Etal historical walk at the northerly castle at Etal.
