A walk at Nenthead Near Alston is an area of remote moorland interspersed with the remains of a lead mining industry. When doing this straightforward walk at Nenthead via Nent Hall it is difficult to believe that this place used to team with life. Nenthead to Garrigill walk The Nenthead to Garrigill walk is highly enjoyable. The fascinating villages at both ends bookmark an area of remote and rarely walked moorland. Ashgill Falls is good as well. The Walk Nenthead has an impressive history. Pike o’ Blisco Pike o’ Blisco is a rugged Lake District mountain that overlooks the Langdale Pikes from the south. It is often added to a Crinkle Crags walk but also makes for an excellent, if steep, climb on its own. The Walk 2304′. Bassenthwaite to Threlkeld The area to the north of Skiddaw is a wonderful place to walk. A good path follows the route from Bassenthwaite to Threlkeld and passes Dash Falls and Skiddaw House before finishing with fine views down Borrowdale. The Walk The lonely walk past Skiddaw House is superb. The Beautiful River Nidd The River Nidd south of Pateley Bridge winds its way slowly through some attractive countryside. Some of the villages still show reminders of the areas industrial heritage. The Walk Downriver from Pateley Bridge walking along the River Nidd is a real pleasure. The paths are good and stick unusually close to the water. A walk round Haweswater A few years ago I did a walk round Haweswater in drought conditions. The western shores are lovely on a path which keeps close to the water but much of the eastern return are on the side of the road. Twin Peaks of Longsleddale Tarn Crag and Grey Crag are the twin peaks of Longsleddale. They are rounded hills of rough grass which are easily linked. It is a long drive up the Longsleddale valley but if you are Wainwright bagging you will have to do it. The Walk 2176′. Penhill Beacon in Wensleydale The prominent cairn of Penhill Beacon is easily visible on the southern slopes of Wensleydale. This walk takes you up on to the moors direct to the beacon before dropping in to the remains of the lead mining industry. The Walk On my first visit I approached Penhill Beacon from the wrong side. Wainwrights of Ennerdale To the south of Ennerdale Water lie 4 Wainwright fells which are probably the least visited in the Lake District. Grike, Crag Fell and Lank Rigg make a natural circuit but Caw Fell to the east is a bit of an outlier. The main attraction of this walk are the views over Ennerdale which are 4 Rating: Moderate and over 10 miles 9mi Distance: 9 miles / 14.4 km 800m Elevation: 800m / 2624ft
Walk over the Simonside Hills The walk over the Simonside Hills is one of the most popular in Northumberland. It is easy walking to/from and along the ridge itself, picking your way between the sandstone exposed rocks. You can start the walk from Rothbury or closer to the ridge making it very straightforward. Cracoe to Rylstone Cross There is a short steep climb from Cracoe to Rylstone Cross set on the edge of Embsay Moor. A short distance away lies Cracoe Monument. This offers a pleasant half day circuit. Smardale Gill walk The walk at Smardale Gill will take you up on to the moors before returning via the old railway line, alongside Scandal Beck. The walk is very pleasant but becomes better as the track passes under the viaduct.
