Hallin Fell, Ullswater Hallin Fell is a sprightly little fell near Howtown, perfectly placed for enjoying some of the best views up and down Ullswater. The fell itself is typically lakes, little rocky outcrops, bracken covered hillside and a fine summit cairn. The Walk 1271′. Lion & the Lamb The Lion and the Lamb (Helm Crag) is one of the most impressive and memorable sites for anyone travelling from the north or south towards Grasmere. It is Grasmere’s mountain. The climb does justice to the long distance views. In addition the summit area is a fascinating place, full of hidden hollows and rocky knolls. 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 307m Elevation: 307m / 1007ft
Fellbarrow over Loweswater Two easy, but rarely visited Wainwrights lie on Fellbarrow over Loweswater. The views from the lower, southern summit to upper Buttermere are particularly impressive as is the underfoot terrain. The Walk 1363′. It is so tempting to pass Fellbarrow and Low Fell and ignore them. I have done exactly that many times as I headed 3 Rating: Moderate walk 5mi Distance: 5 miles / 8 km 456m Elevation: 456m / 1496ft
Ard Crags above Newlands The climb along Ard Crags above Newlands is one of the finest and easiest ridge walks in the Lake District. The views are excellent and it feels a privilege to be there. However their are steep slopes at either end. The Walk 1860′. Pike o’ Blisco Pike o’ Blisco is a rugged Lake District mountain that overlooks the Langdale Pikes from the south. It is often added to a Crinkle Crags walk but also makes for an excellent, if steep, climb on its own. The Walk 2304′. An irresistible name combined with a true mountain profile makes Pike o’ Blisco one of my 3 Rating: Moderate walk 6mi Distance: 6 miles / 9.6 km 583m Elevation: 583m / 1912ft
Twin Peaks of Longsleddale Tarn Crag and Grey Crag are the twin peaks of Longsleddale. They are rounded hills of rough grass which are easily linked. It is a long drive up the Longsleddale valley but if you are Wainwright bagging you will have to do it. The Walk 2176′. Silver How and Easedale Tarn Silver How lies to the west of Grasmere and is full of rocky knolls, lumps and hollows. Hidden tarns pepper the area and there is always a surprise around the corner (look for the tarn in Megs Gill). Descend via Easedale Tarn for a ‘proper’ Lake District walk with outstanding views. Cold Pike from Wrynose Cold Pike from Wrynose is a pleasant, short walk up a rocky little mountain overlooking Langdale. The return via the picturesque Red Tarn adds a lot to the walk. The Walk 2260′. Climbing Cold Pike from Wrynose Pass may feel a bit like cheating. Blea Rigg from Langdale The walk up Blea Rigg from Langdale is full of character. The rugged terrain is typically lakes, rocky knolls and hidden hollows full of interest. As ever though it is the outstanding views you will remember. The Walk 1776′. For once chuck away the map. Gowbarrow via Aira Force The climb of Gowbarrow via Aira Force is highly enjoyable. Not only do you visit a popular waterfall but the views from Gowbarrow along Ullswater are some of the best in the Lake District. The Walk 1425′. Binsey from Bassenthwaite A short climb of Binsey from Bassenthwaite brings some excellent views towards the Solway Furth to Skiddaw and beyond. The summit area has some interest and may have been the location for an old hill fort. Causey Pike The distinctive summit knolls of Causey Pike can be seen from miles away. The steep climb though is hard. From the summit head over Scar Crags and Sail before returning over Outerside. The Walk I climbed Causey Pike just before the March Covid shut down.
