Troutbeck Tongue With good views over Windermere Troutbeck Tongue is an unusual Wainwright tucked, as it is, between higher mountains. The walk from Troutbeck is interesting following, as it does, an old Roman Road. However it is the ridge itself that makes the walk. Place Fell over Ullswater The walk up Place Fell over Ullswater and returning via the lakeside path is excellent. The fell is full of interesting rocky knolls and dells with outstanding views. The lakeside section is a pleasant bonus. It is also a perfect walk in snowy conditions. The Walk 2154′. Stony Cove Pike from Kirkstone Pass Kirkstone Pass is a high place to start any walk. A short climb brings you on to the long broad ridge heading for Stony Cove Pike. The return is via the same route. It is an easy way to get reluctant walkers on to the higher fells or in this case in winter conditions. 3 Rating: Moderate walk 4mi Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km 318m Elevation: 318m / 1043ft
Sale Fell Bassenthwaite To the west of Bassenthwaite, to the south of the road from Keswick to Cockermouth, is Sale Fell. A pleasant short climb brings you to the open summit of one of the smallest of the Wainwright Fells and excellent views over the rarely visited Wythop valley. The Walk 1,170 ft. Harter Fell Midway between the less visited Duddon Valley and Eskdale is Harter Fell. A rugged, steep sided mountain it stands on its own and is almost, and unusually, impossible to link with other mountains. The Walk Whichever way it is approached Harter Fell is an attractive mountain. Climbing Glaramara Climbing Glaramara from Borrowdale is a joy. The mountain itself has rocky outcrops, hidden hollows and increasingly impressive views north over Derwentwater. Improve the walk by heading along the wide, rigged ridge past Rosthwaite Fell to the Tarn at Leaves. The Walk 2,560 feet. I have always been attracted to Glaramara. Latterbarrow from Hawkshead The summit of Latterbarrow is an excellent place to view the Coniston fells and much of the south western Lakes. Climbing Latterbarrow from Hawkshead is, in itself, very straightforward on a very good path. The Walk 803′. For many years I never realised that there was an excellent short walk near Hawkshead. Climb Orrest Head Orrest Head is the little hill overlooking Windermere. The climb is short but the views over the lake are excellent. The walk is varied by heading back through some mixed woodland. The walk 783ft. Many 3 and 4 year olds must have toiled through the woods to Orrest Head and claimed their first ‘summit’. Fleetwith Pike The distinctive (ship’d bow) shape of Fleetwith Pike dominates the head of Buttermere. On the southern slopes are the remains of a slate mine whilst further east is the open mine with its neighbouring Via Ferrata. There are plans to add a zip wire to its northern slopes. Climbing Catbells Climbing Catbells is a right of passage for any youngster visiting the Lake District for the first time. With parking a problem this route is from nearby Little Town. Taking the short ferry from Keswick is another option. The Walk 1,481 ft. I am sure the Tourist Board will tell me otherwise but my guess 2 Rating: Easy with uphill sections 4.5mi Distance: 4.5 miles / 7.2 km 301m Elevation: 301m / 987ft
Beatrix Potter Country Between Windermere and Coniston is an area of lowland tarns and woodland known as Beatrix Potter Country. It is where she lived and was spent the happiest days of her life. Claiffe Heights is the high point and a challenge to find, I assume she did!. High Spy over Borrowdale High Spy is in the centre of a long wide ridge separating Borrowdale from Newlands. This walk combines High Spy with an exploration of Upper Borrowdale. The Walk It was a glorious sunny (and hot) day when myself and Greg headed up High Spy to the broad ridge that separates Borrowdale and Newlands.
