The Beautiful River Nidd The River Nidd south of Pateley Bridge winds its way slowly through some attractive countryside. Some of the villages still show reminders of the areas industrial heritage. The Walk Downriver from Pateley Bridge walking along the River Nidd is a real pleasure. The paths are good and stick unusually close to the water. Penhill Beacon in Wensleydale The prominent cairn of Penhill Beacon is easily visible on the southern slopes of Wensleydale. This walk takes you up on to the moors direct to the beacon before dropping in to the remains of the lead mining industry. The Walk On my first visit I approached Penhill Beacon from the wrong side. Cracoe to Rylstone Cross There is a short steep climb from Cracoe to Rylstone Cross set on the edge of Embsay Moor. A short distance away lies Cracoe Monument. This offers a pleasant half day circuit. Smardale Gill walk The walk at Smardale Gill will take you up on to the moors before returning via the old railway line, alongside Scandal Beck. The walk is very pleasant but becomes better as the track passes under the viaduct. Lost world of Dallowgill Dallowgill has some lovely walking along the river and through the woods. It is a forgotten part of the Yorkshire Dales that sits between Masham and Ripon. It is always quiet. I have now visited a couple of times and discovered the lost world of Dallowgill. Jervaulx Abbey and the River Ure An easy walk starts through the grounds of Jervaulx Abbey. The walk then crosses the River Ure and enters the well preserved village of Thornton Stewart. The walk drops back to the River Ure at Danby Hall. Calf Top and Barbondale Calf Top lies on the ridge to the north of Barbondale. It is the lowest of the ‘Dales 30’ mountains but the tranquility and peace on its slopes makes it one of the most enjoyable. The climb is obvious and straightforward but there is a choice on the descent (see below). The walk along the riverside follows the Pennine Way before returning over the farmland to the west. Birks Fell, Upper Wharfedale Birks Fell is one of four “Dales 30” mountains that ring the head of Upper Wharfedale. Birks is the long uniform ridge high above the villages of Buckden and Kettlewell on the west side of the dale.
