Gummer’s How Gummer’s How is a short climb to a wonderful view point on the south east shores of Windermere. The rocky summit is a taste of Lakeland in miniature. Barrow from Braithwaite This short, but rewarding, walk up Barrow from Braithwaite has excellent views. It offers a great vantage point for understanding the layout of Coledale Round as well as good views north towards Blencathra and Skiddaw. The Walk 1,494 ft. Blencathra via Sharp Edge Blencathra via Sharp Edge is an exposed scramble (Grade 1) to the eastern end of the ‘saddle’ of the mountain. It is a challenge and should be taken seriously as it is a little more exposed than nearby Halls Fell Ridge or Striding Edge on Helvellyn. Trough of Bowland There is some wonderful, unspoilt countryside lying to the north of Dunsop Bridge. Having enjoyed the solitude, the tracks emerge at the Trough Of Bowland before returning via Langden Brook. The Walk Heading north from Dunsop Bridge brought me in to the heart of the Forest of Bowland. Sledmere House and Park There are some lovely views down to Sledmere House from the woods to the south. The village is extremely pleasant as are the grounds in the house. I did not take a tour of the house however. Stone Arthur & Alcock Tarn Alcock Tarn is sandwiched between the village of Grasmere and the western arm of the Fairfield Round. It is a beautiful situation, rarely visited and can be directly accessed by a short, steep climb. Much better is to include Alcock Tarn as part of a higher circuit including Stone Arthur and Heron Pike. The Walk 1 Rating: Easier walk 7.5mi Distance: 7.5 miles / 12 km 760m Elevation: 760m / 2493ft
Coledale Round The Coledale Round dominates the northern lakes near Keswick. Many do sections or individual mountains but those who complete the full round are best rewarded. The ever changing views, a multitude of Wainwrights coupled with a long day out is immensely satisfying. Brimham Rocks It is great fun on Brimham Rocks. Rather than just visit though it is more enjoyable to make the visit in to a short but ‘proper’ walk. The rocks themselves are a series of sandstone boulders which you can scramble on. Arden Hall and Coomb Hill From Hawnby the walk heads past Arden Hall and Coomb Hill. There is plenty of lovely woodland to enjoy and later in the walk some good views over the Hills over Hawnby. Mynydd Mawr Mynydd Mawr (698m) is a graceful peak, a bit of a rose amongst the rugged mountains that stand close by, Snowdon included. In addition the mountain is quiet making for a pleasant half day climb. Horton to Settle walk There are many alternatives in this one way walk from Horton to Settle. A high level route via Pen-y-Ghent or a riverside stroll along the River Ribble give two. There is a third which heads west towards Feizor. The Walk Practically any walk from the lovely Settle to Carlisle railway is worthwhile.
