A walk through Littondale There is no more pleasant way to spend the afternoon than a walk through Littondale. The villages, stone barns, walls and winding river make for an interesting walk even if some is alongside a quiet road. Nine Standards Rigg Nine Standards Rigg is a large fell situated near Kirkby Stephen and a significant obstacle on the Coast to Coast. A walk in Gisburn Forest On a wet or windy day, a walk in Gisburn Forest makes a good choice. There are marked trails and less well marked paths! Choose your own and enjoy the solitude and quiet only a forest can bring. The Walk I have never been particularly attracted by forestry walking. Keld and Upper Swaledale The area of Keld and Upper Swaledale is one of my favourite places to walk in the Dales. It is an area dominated by traditional stone barns and fields full of sheep, the River Swale and steep sided hills. This walk keeps (relatively) low and includes some quite excellent views. Askrigg, Aysgarth & Herriot Country walk This walk through Herriot Country from Askrigg to Aysgarth starts on the higher land and returns along the River Ure. It passes through some pleasant limestone scenery with outstanding views across the dale. Crosthwaite near Kendal A quiet countryside walk at Crosthwaite near Kendal across rolling countryside. In spring there is a profusion of wild flowers and good views on the return. Hampsfell from Grange-over-Sands A number low lying hills lie to the south of the Lake District. The exposed limestone on them makes them a real pleasure to walk on. Beamsley Beacon Beamsley Beacon stands proud over the A59 between Skipton and Harrogate. It is a quiet area considering its proximity to Bolton Abbey. The traditional short walk to the beacon can (and should) be extended to include Round Hill. The shores of Thirlmere The walk along the eastern shores of Thirlmere initially sticks close to the lake. It is an unusual path. The return is on the slopes of the mountain opposite with good views and passing some small waterfalls. Bordley on Malham Moor This is a peaceful walk passing through Bordley on Malham Moor. Mastilles Lane just to the north is the popular way to cross from Malhamdale to Upper Wharfedale but this quiet walk is a pleasant alternative. Appleby and the River Eden The walk at Appleby and the River Eden follows the river at times but also enters some rough countryside and past a number of small hamlets. The town of Appleby with its castle is a good place to spend time.
