A walk up the Great Orme Any walk up the Great Orme is packed with interest. It is perched high above the sea with excellent views in all direction. Walk round Humphrey Head Ever since my children went to Humphrey Head outdoor centre I have been intrigued by the place. However it has taken me nearly 10 years to take the lovely walk round Humphrey Head and discover it for myself. Ancient Castles of Mallerstang The two ancient castles of Mallerstang (Lammerside and Pendragon) offer a focus for an excellent walk along this rarely visited dale. A mix of lanes, tracks and footpaths pass through a landscape of moors, farmland and a reservoir. The Remotest Spot in England? I was somewhat surprised to find that the remotest spot in England is in the Yorkshire Dales. I had assumed it was further north, maybe in the Pennines of Cumbria or Northumberland. It is not. Cadair Idris Cadair Idris is a picture perfect mountain. Seen from the deep corrie (cwm) of Llyn Cau it offers a dramatic front, steep cliffs leading up to a broad ridge. The ascent via the Minffordd Path is the best approach with a descent from Mynydd Moel completing one of the best mountain days in Britain. Walk round Stock’s Reservoir The walk round Stock’s Reservoir is full of interest. Much of it stays close to the water’s edge. However in places the tracks venture inland and are much the better for it. The Walk Knowing the history of Stock’s Reservoir helps increase the enjoyment of the walk. The Other Borrowdale The ‘Other’ Borrowdale is situated near Tebay just off the M6. However the walk goes through a unspoilt valley and returns via the rolling countryside on its north side. Amongst other things there are interesting views of the M6. Derwentwater via Walla Crag The walk reads like a list of ‘must visit’ sites near Keswick. Walla Crag, Ashness Bridge, Surprise View and a return along the shores of Derwentwater to Keswick complete a fine day out. Threlkeld to Keswick walk The one way Threlkeld to Keswick walk follows the disused railway line alongside the River Greta via a series of bridges. The woods are the home to red squirrels. Take the bus to Threlkeld and walk back. Climbing Arnside Knott Climbing Arnside Knott is very satisfying. The small hill sits on the edge of Morcambe Bay and any walk on its slopes gives excellent views over the southern Lakes. Limestone outcrops and woodland cover its steep slopes.
